Automatic Music
While music and audio files that play automatically can set the tone and first impression of your website; more often than it is a source of annoyance. This is because it can be seen as disruptive. If the visitor to your website is listening to their own music, your website automatically playing competing music will just result in excess and unnecessary noise. Even if visitors are not listening to their own music, they may not be in an environment which welcomes the sudden playing of music from your website – examples here would include in public, in the workplace or in a school setting.
PDF Downloads
Some website developers and designers refer to PDF files and downloads on websites as the rust of the internet. While they can be downloaded with ease, it is another task altogether to attempt to edit them or even copy and paste text from the file. Once within a PDF file, there are no social media sharing options either.
QR Codes
These were arguably a fad with the general public and have fallen even less out of favour with the increase of mobile phone usage for internet browsing. By scanning a QR code with your mobile phone, you may just end up on the mobile website of a company. If a QR code is not in use to offer exclusive and /or hidden contents and offers; what place do they have on your website otherwise?
Social Media Symbols
A FaceBook or Twitter Icon appearing on your website is nothing but a brightly coloured exit sign from your website. Do not fall into the trap of melding your website visitors and social media followers into once place on your website. Respect what each platform has to offer and target them separately as to what they will respond better to (website landing pages or social media updates).
Super Stock Imagery
Some images are so prevalent on the internet today that they are synonymous with low budget and low effort websites. Think of the image of an attractive office worker smiling ear to ear with a wide smile plastered on their face – often seen on ‘Contact Us’ pages. These super stock images (super due to their power to appear in many places at once) connote little or no effort being put into the design of your website as your website aesthetics can look like a clone of similar websites.
