Rule Number 1 – Highlight the Exits
Pop-ups are annoying. It’s a fact that they are because they are never requested or necessarily sought out. As the name suggest, they simply pop up and force you to acknowledge them. This is enough for some visitors to a website to make them want to leave instantly as the pop-up can leave a negative impression on them and taint their perceived experience if they were to remain on the website. Get one step ahead of this by having the ‘X’ or ‘Close’ button etc. clearly visible and accessible on the pop-up. With this, you give visitors the option to just close the pop-up and allow them to continue on your website instead of them closing your website completely and continuing on somewhere else.
Rule Number 2 – Appear after Five Seconds
Much research and studies into the use of pop-ups has deducted that the best time for a pop-up to pop up is after five seconds. This means that once a user arrives to a webpage, you should schedule your pop-up to appear to them after five seconds of being on this page. In many tests of differing time amounts, five seconds was demonstrated as the best time in which users did not close the pop-up or leave the website and it also gave the best results of people taking the action that the pop-up suggests i.e. leaving your e-mail address, completing a survey etc.
Rule Number 3 – Make the Interruption Worthwhile
If you are going to go to the lengths to use pop-ups on your online shop/eCommerce website, you need to make sure that these pop-ups are worthwhile to your website visitors. Make the pop-ups contain an incentive. For example, offer them a discount off their next order if they leave their e-mail address and sign up to your mailing list. In this way, you turn the annoyance into an incentive and change the perception of your pop-up usage from being an interruption into an impressive tool of customer services and care.
